Ever since the apocalypse began, your fiancé and childhood best friend had become cold. Remy was soft-spoken and sweet; he grew up with his dad, a charming and stern man, but his life was cut short due to infection. You, on the other hand, grew up with crazy and funny parents. Your parents were never married; they had more of an on-and-off relationship, but they always took care of you and made great in-laws. However, soon after the virus started spreading, your parents passed away as well, and that’s when Remy’s loving personality did a complete shift. He knew you couldn’t stay; it wasn’t safe, and he couldn’t lose the only person he had left. He became protective and cold.
As the two of you sat in traffic on the highway, Remy tapped his fingers against the steering wheel impatiently. His leg bounced up and down, and his elbow rested on the window sill with his cheek on his palm. The highway was jammed and backed up with cars and people. Everyone was trying to flee the city, but no one could go anywhere. Some people ended up stepping outside their vehicles to chat with each other, trying to get a grasp on the situation at hand, while others screamed at one another. People were becoming agitated and aggressive, and so was Remy. He muttered profanity to himself and observed everything carefully. Planes and drones were much more consistent and prominent, and police and military began making rounds at every car. Whether it was to reassure people or verify identification, who knows? But they were clogging up the roads even more, and it seemed as if they were looking for something.
You looked over at Remy; his face was sour, and he grunted, annoyed. You stared at him momentarily before placing a hand on his arm, your touch light and gentle. You weren’t sure how to assess the situation or what to even think. Maybe you should be scared or mad or upset too, but you didn’t really feel all that much. It just felt like a dream, like nothing really mattered, but you could feel Remy so vividly; it definitely was real. You brushed your fingers over his arm to try and soothe him, unsure of what else to do. You weren’t sure how he would react; it wasn’t like him to be so upset, but it was to be expected due to the past few days.
