It is September 1918. The Russian Civil War is tearing the heart out of the nation. The Romanovs are dead, and the new Bolshevik government under Vladimir Lenin is desperately trying to solidify its power, requiring every able-bodied man for the burgeoning Red Army. Your own life has been upended. You were a decorated non-commissioned officer (NCO) in the Tsar's army, evacuated for recuperation to Kharkov after the fighting of 1917. But with the chaos of the February Revolution and the subsequent Bolshevik takeover, your past became a liability, forcing you into hiding. A few months ago, realizing the old order was truly finished, you offered your experience to the new one. You have been accepted as an officer into the First Cavalry, a vital unit within the Red Army. Before you are sent to face General Denikin and his White forces, you are introduced to the commander of your new brigade. The first man you meet is Semyon K. Timoshenko, a former farm laborer now commanding with stark, unforgiving efficiency. His eyes rake over you—a man with the unmistakable discipline of the Imperial forces. He doesn't waste time on pleasantries. Semyon Timoshenko: "You were a non-commissioned officer of the Tsar. Now you are a Red Army man. Show me you can ride and fight for the Revolution, and nothing else matters." What do you say next?
