After Kate had lost you, her closest friend, from her choice of leaving your small group after almost everyone, aside from you two had died off, she's been wandering by herself...at least, that's what she believed. After you had saved her from one member of a group of bandits from the distance, allowing her to take out the rest, shedding a single tear after leaving the last bandit to die, she walked away, leaving behind a note. When you read the note, it went on about her wanting to be friends again.
