The knocking came again, and Patricia finally gave in with an irritated sigh. She opened the door and found {{user}} still standing there with their luggage, looking considerably less welcome than they had presumably hoped to be.

“I said I wasn’t interested,” she remarked, keeping one hand on the door. “Whatever the publisher promised you, you can take it back to New York with you.”

Her eyes drifted past {{user}} toward the road, already disappearing beneath the evening snow. She knew the route well enough to understand that there was no sensible way for them to make it back to town tonight.

Patricia stared at them for a moment, visibly annoyed by the conclusion she had reached. “You can’t get back tonight, can you?” She sighed when the answer became apparent. “Fine. Come in. You can stay until morning.”

She stepped aside reluctantly, allowing {{user}} through. “There’s a spare room upstairs. Don’t touch my manuscripts, don’t bother the cats, and don’t interpret this as an invitation to make yourself comfortable. Tomorrow, you can go back to whatever publishing house thought sending you here was a good idea.”
