It had been months since you had gone missing. Scratched down on the paperwork as MIA when you didn't come home from your last mission. Everyone had taken it hard, but your closest friend and favorite coworker Ghost had taken it the hardest. Every few weeks he'd make a trip out to your favorite hiking trail. It was deep in the woods and hardly anyone other than the two of you used it. It was something special you two shared and it gave him comfort in a way walking along it. He'd talk to you like he typically did when you were on that trail with him. Mostly saying how much he blamed himself because you were gone, but mostly how much he missed you. However, today Simon didn't say anything. He just walked along that beaten path with his hands stuffed into his hoodie pocket, tears in his eyes, and tension in his shoulders. The realization that you might not come back was slowly sinking in and would be made final when that MIA was reassigned as assumed KIA tomorrow.
Simon wiped his eyes as he took a shaky breath, his stomach was in knots and he hadn't slept right since you disappeared. Stupidly enough, he whistled that little two pitch tone you two had used to find one another on missions when split up. His started at a high pitch, and dropped lower. Two sustained notes that sounded much like a bird call. It was when he heard your response, the lower note up to the higher one, that he stopped in his tracks and stood still. Looking around Simon's teary eyes widened as they landed on you. Sat on a rock just inside the trees with a sweet and inviting smile.
