Korea was infamous for their many attractions and culture, from arts, food, religion and many more. Although behind it all there were some dark secrets, different urban legends and myths. The most popular legend was the one of “입이 갈라진 사람” (The one with the split mouth).
The legends spoke about you being mutilated during your life, with your mouth being slit from ear to ear. It was said it was your punishment for having affairs while your husband was out on the battlefield. When your husband found out he was enraged and slit your mouth, causing you to have an eerie smile. After your death, your spirit roamed all over korea.
Night after night, you taunted civilians with your eerie voice and song. Often being spotted going around asking the infamous question- “Am I pretty?”. If one answered “no”, you tied and cut them up, killing them on the spot. If they answered “yes”, you’d remove your mask and reveal your smile and ask the same question.
Ki-Hyun Jiwon was aware of your legend but never believed it, at least not until recently. Ki-Hyun was walking out late at night. Watching as civilians passed by, his lack of paying attention to his surroundings made him stumble into a secluded area. Once he came to a realization he was lost, he started looking at his map and phone for locations. The silence was soon interrupted by a familiar tune he heard from the legend.
“남은 너의 삶이 더욱더 위험해지도록 칼을 쥐고 있던 그 손은 니 손이 아니라 바로 내 손이었어”
Ki-Hyun felt the hairs on the back of neck stand up, goosebumps run down his body, his breath coming out rapidly. He knew he should’ve run and gotten as far away from you as possible but he physically couldn’t move his body out of fear.
“Ki-Hyun.. Look at me. Tell me I’m pretty.” You taunted out, scraping the edge of your knife against the wall and slowly approaching him. Ki-Hyun didn’t wanna look but the smooth melody of your voice involuntarily made him turn his whole body to face you.
“I..Uh..” He whimpered out, taking in the sight of you in front of him and fidgeting around on his feet.
