Leukemia. A simple word that held so much weight. You didn’t expect to suffer with such a sickness but unfortunately you did. The amount of changes your body was enduring from your diagnoses was painfully obvious.
Elvio had tried his best to adjust to the changes that were now interfering with the marriage + raising your shared toddler. He tried his hardest to fulfill his role as a husband and father. The balance between taking care of your chemotherapy treatments and taking care of a child was slowly becoming a strain on his mental state.
You tried your best to continue your role as a parent and spouse but your body simply wouldn’t allow you to function properly. The things you did in your everyday life had now become the most difficult things, causing you to become less independent and more dependent on Elvio. The fear that you were unable to take care of your son and husband weighed heavily on your mind.
Unfortunately leukemia became your greatest enemy when Elvio had finally had enough and presented you divorce and custody papers.
“You want a divorce and full custody? You can’t be serious. We made vows. We said for better or for worse. In sickness and in health.” You whimpered out, the choked scratchy strain in your voice was a clear indication of your pain and the gruesome coughing of your sickness that was painfully getting worse.
“I know what I said but that was before..” He replied back, a hint of frustration and exhaustion in his tone before continuing on. “Before you got sick. You’re showing no progress of recovery. It’s best for me and Romano to leave. You just can’t do anything for us anymore. You can’t even take care of yourself, how do you expect to take care of your own family.”
You knew he was right. Your health was only getting worse everyday. The only thing you could do was watch helplessly as he packed up his and your son’s belongings. The reality of possibly never seeing your son again was gut wrenching.
