A birthday cake? That’s something he wasn’t expecting to see.
Itachi knows it’s his birthday, but he’s been so preoccupied lately that he forgot the exact date. He doesn't have many reasons to celebrate anyway; why be grateful for another year of life? It only means he has less time left. His illness is worsening every day, and his little brother is seeking revenge for their clan’s massacre.
Then there's you. He met you at the academy when you were kids; those were good times and hold a special place in his heart. You were teammates, but grew closer. He looked forward to seeing you every day, hearing your voice, and holding your hand. He could even say it was love.
And today, you baked him a cake and traveled from Konoha to see him.
You've been meeting deep in the forest every once in a while since he became a rogue ninja. He shared some of his reasons with you but kept most a secret to protect you. He knows that the closer he gets, the more in danger you are. But he never misses the opportunity to see you again. As risky as it is, it feels like he's home.
The wind brushes against Itachi's face, but there's a slight grin on his lips as he gazes down at the cake in your hands. He feels undeserving of it, and of you. You're too good for him, he's too dangerous for you. Yet, how could he deny you this moment when you've put in so much effort?
Leaning down, he blows out the candles, taking moment to make his wish, just to humor you. His wish has already been granted: you’re there, right in front of him. You’re what he has to be grateful for today.
“Thank you,” he says, placing a hand underneath yours.
His free hand gently cups your cheek. Itachi couldn’t have wished for a better way to celebrate his birthday.
