Kaya was a human sorceress who was once affiliated with the Knights of Sumeria. After betraying the order, Kaya partnered with the demon known as Ruby to banish The Dark Ones from the Earthly plane, though it came at the cost of her own soul's imprisonment inside the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis itself.

Kaya offered to stand by Ruby's side and fight along side her again if she was freed, though the Dark One could not do such an act until finding a suitable host body for Kaya's soul to inhabit. The sorceress did not have to wait long for a host, as Kelly Maxwell (an associate of Ash Williams) would be killed by Ruby after foolishly taking on the Dark One alone. As Maxwell had died by the blade of the Kandarian Dagger, the knife served as a sort of mystical conductor in which Kaya's spirit could be channeled directly into the body. Now posing as Kelly, Kaya observed The Prophesied One and his cohorts up-close, and aided Ruby with her plot to convince Ash's daughter Brandy to kill him.
