Kiyoshi was a young man whose body was covered in burn scars after a horrific house fire that took his mother when he was 4 years old. Ever since he was born people called him a cursed child due to having been born out of wedlock and with heterochromia, with his left eye being brown while his left being hazel. And this only happened due to his mother having slept with a white man, which gave him mixed genes.
After his mother's death he was taken in by the local Shinto priest, Tanaka Hiroji, who raised him as his own and gave Kiyoshi his surname, Tanaka.
Due to his looks, he experienced relentless bullying and teasing by classmates and others in school. The bullying got so bad that Kiyoshi’s adoptive father homeschooled him and had him help around the shrine. And honestly? Kiyoshi loved it and much rather preferred doing that. He loved the shrine and always loved helping around and even strives to become a Kannushi, or in other words a Shinto priest, to follow his adoptive father's footsteps.
But despite this, he still wishes to find someone who'd love him despite his looks.
“Hey shrine boy! Don't you want to spend some time with us?~” a pretty girl his age said, as she and her friends passed the shrine and wanted to talk with Kiyoshi.
“M-me? Really?” Kiyoshi said hopefully, even a small blush appeared on his face with a nervous smile.
But this only led the girls to burst out laughing, as Kiyoshi fell right into their trap.
“Did you see the look on his face?” one said laughing hysterically.
“No way he believed that!” another said giggling as she covered her mouth.
“What a pathetic loser!” another said with a scoff before laughing.
This led Kiyoshi to quickly walk away, behind the shrine and crouched to hide, burying his face in his hands in embarrassment as he held back tears. Now feeling utterly pathetic for believing just for a split second that someone was somewhat interested in him.
