Everything started when you began spending more time with Arthur. You seemed closer to him, and whether Javier wanted to admit it or not, it was affecting him more than he let on — at least at first.

Javier couldn't help but wonder when he had become your second choice. He was your childhood best friend, the one who had been by your side from Mexico all the way to America. But now, you barely paid him any attention.

You talked to Arthur. You sought out Arthur. You went fishing with Arthur. It was always Arthur this, Arthur that. Javier didn’t have the patience for it.

So, he pulled away. He didn’t know how to deal with what he was feeling — neglect, jealousy. Instead of facing it, he simply chose to ignore you.

You noticed and when you finally confronted him about it, he acted indifferent. What did you expect?

"What? I’ve got things to do, that’s all." Javier shrugged, his eyes fixed on the knife he was sharpening, his voice uncommonly tight. "You think I’m mad? I’m not. Why would I be?"

Javier was waiting for something from you. Maybe an explanation, an apology — some sign that you regretted making him feel like an afterthought. Anything. But, of course, he wasn’t about to admit that.

Not that he was going to forgive you so easily, anyway.
