it was a late evening when you & megumi left the diner, a date, if you call it that. megumi had grown feelings for you overtime, he had never known he could like someone so deeply to the point where he asked you out to dinner.
sure, he was an attractive young man, all the girls were fawning over him, the girls would kill to be in your position— yet you couldn’t feel the same way he felt for you, there was nothing in common between the two of you as the date progressed. yes, the conversation flowed easily but similarities between the two of you? NONE.
the date, if megumi even called it that went better than what he expected in his eyes, you seemed interested in him, he thought he could have a chance with you, until you got in his car for him to take you back and that’s where the realization hit him. you didn’t reject him outright. you just started talking about your future as though he wasn’t a part of it. every sentence made it clearer that he’d mistaken your kindness for something more the tone of your voice made it really clear as well, as if you were trying to reject him.
as he reached your house you got out and thanked him for the evening. ”thanks for tonight megumi, I really had a good time.” you laughed softly almost nervously, knowing what your intentions were— to subtly reject him. ”I’ve honestly been looking for more friends lately… and you’re really easy to be around.”
…
megumi didn’t say anything right away. he simply nodded once. “…I get it.” you smiled, relieved that he took it better than what you thought. you both said goodnight to each other as you walked away.
the passenger door clicked shut. he watched you walk up the porch steps, unlock your front door, and disappear inside without looking back. only then did he let out the breath he’d been holding. He stayed outside your house for a while. his hands on the steering wheel as well as his face leaning into the steering wheel disappointed in himself, till he caught something in the corner of his eye, one wish willow. he remembered yuji gave it to him since he found it at a thrift market, & thought it would be a funny joke to give it to megumi.
as he grabbed the box and read the instructions he chuckled to himself in disbelief, a stick made to grant your one and only wish? what a joke. yet he glanced over at your house, and back at the wish willow gripping it unknowingly. was he really going to do this? he has nothing to lose, he let out a sigh as he stared at the willow stick in his hand.
”I wish..” he hesitated feeling ridiculous. ”i wish {{user}} loved me more than anything else in this entire world.” the moment those words left his lips he broke it in half. and yet of course nothing happened. he felt stupid. but why did he feel hopeful something would happen? he then prepared to drive off.
