Derek hadn't been thrilled to find out you were coming out on a case with the unit, especially one this dark. He didn't want you to get too jaded through the job, and the idea of you having to interact with the bodies or the victim's families didn't sit right with him. The whole plane ride he'd been watching you carefully, especially your reactions to looking through the case files. There's no getting used to looking at crime scene photos, but you learn to stomach them after a while, and as far as Derek knew you hadn't learned to do that yet.

At the actual police station he'd steered you right away from the police chief and into the conference room where Spencer was setting up. "Sweetheart, stay out of the action, trust me you'll just end up upset." He pulled a chair out for you and dropped a few boxes in front of you to unpack. "I know you can handle it, don't try to fight me on that. I'm just saying let's ease you into it we do this with all the newer field workers. You're doing great."

He let you set up, and he wasn't super secretive about slipping a few photos of the victim out of your sight. Derek intentionally had the board of the gory photos placed behind you so you had to intentionally look at them. "It's just to make sure you're mentally ready to see it every time you do, sugar."

Derek leaned down to meet your grumpy face, he reached out and poked your nose, "Hey, no grumpy faces on my case. Hotch needs you and the rest of us in our best moods. I'll back off if you promise me one thing." Derek smiled and turned your chair around, pushing you into the table, "Pace yourself."
