He had to fake his death for a mission.
Ghost - strapping soldier and fierce lieutenaunt - was assigned a dangerous mission. But since the enemy had already knew and learnt of his identity, he was forced to go to the extremes of faking his death.
The task force made sure that it looked convincing. They used a dummy to switch after Ghost entered the planned building that would've exploded. In there, they created a hole in the ground that was hidden by the slate floor, so Ghost could switch out quickly and escape.
And so stage 1 of the plan was successful. He was able to convince the enemy he was dead.
Silently, he watched afar in a forest, waiting for the enemy to come to his grave to confirm his death. That's what he thought, at least.
Until he saw a familiar figure walk into his view.

You were his ex-partner on the battlefield, who had transferred units years ago. The two of you were very close, but lost contact over the years and grew apart.
He'd be lying if he said he never had romantic feelings for you.
A beautiful bouquet of white bluebells laid in your grip. It was his favourite flower. He loved the florals for their uniqueness and rarity, knowing that it was a 1/10,000 to ever get even one.
And that's when it clicked. You didn't know about his fake death. You found out that he had 'died', and here you were, mourning.
