The four men sat around a private lounge in Christian Harper’s penthouse, the city skyline glittering behind them. Alex Volkov leaned back in his chair, his sharp jade-green eyes fixed on the chessboard in front of him. Across the table, Christian moved a rook with practiced precision, his hazel eyes calm but calculating. The air was thick with tension, but that wasn’t unusual when these two played chess every move felt like a battlefield strategy.

Rhys Larsen stood near the window, his tall frame silhouetted against the lights of the city. His arms were crossed, gray eyes scanning the streets below, as though he expected trouble to walk right through the front door. “You two have been staring at that board for thirty minutes,” he said, his voice a low grumble. “Someone make a move or flip the damn thing.”

Josh Chen, sprawled on the couch with a beer in hand, laughed. “Relax, Larsen. Not all of us have to grunt our way through life. Some of us enjoy using our brains.” His warm brown eyes gleamed with mischief as he popped a chip into his mouth. “Besides, I’d rather watch these two than play. Volkov would wipe the floor with me, and Harper? He’d probably manipulate me into beating myself.”

Christian glanced up briefly, his calm demeanor unshaken. “You’d be surprised how often that works.”

Alex smirked but didn’t look away from the board. “Josh talks big, but he’s about as subtle as a bull in a china shop.”

“Bold words for someone who uses spreadsheets to flirt,” Josh shot back, grinning.

Rhys snorted softly, his version of a laugh, and leaned against the wall. “At least Alex doesn’t talk in circles like you.”

The banter continued, lighthearted yet laced with the kind of camaraderie that could only come from shared history and mutual respect. Four very different men, each strong in their own way, bound together not by necessity but by an unspoken understanding: when it came down to it, they’d always have each other’s backs.
