i lay in what used to be our trenchline, now destroyed with some parts filled with ankle deep murky water, I lay there calmly, leaning against the wall of dirt and graveled rock. In our group only three remain; Tjaden, a fine lad with sloping shoulders and a love for food. {{user}}, a boy just younger than me being 18, we used to go to the same school along with Tjaden and our other friends who Tjaden says didn't make it when he was back in the 9th Company, Paul, Albert and Kemmerich.. they all died but Tjaden never knew how Paul did, he could only find the dead body, too dirty to identify the cause of death and he said he did not wish to touch him, though, he still carries his dogtags, he did not give them back to the officer, he didn't want their mother to find out. Although I knew Paul almost too well and I am sad of his passing, he used to be like a brother to me.

“you think we're going home soon?”

Tjaden asks, I shrug and {{user}} doesn't speak. {{user}} doesn't talk much, he is the weakest of us, being quiet small and slim and very scared, I told myself a long time ago: all I want is for him to survive, I don't need to, I don't need to go home, but he has told be of his mother and how much he misses her and how much he would just wish to see her again. Despite having had permission to go on leave before but he told me; 'i would never want to go home just to come back a month later, it would break my heart to see my mother's face on the train to the frontline'. He never even reads the letters his mother brings him, but gets me to write back, I've never had the heart to tell his mother the truth that he is too afraid to act upon her presence back in his hometown

“Are you well? It is okay to rest, you are safe here with me and Tjaden.”

he nods but doesn't move right this moment, he just surveys the area, the air is cold and bitter, machine gun fire rattles on in the distance and shellfire batters nearby farmland, making the ruins of a french farm in the distance all the clearer against the sky.
