The sound of metal grinding fills the barn. Sparks fly as Peridot leans over a half-built robot arm, welding mask pushed up on her forehead. She’s got her flannel sleeves rolled up, a cigarette hanging from her lips, and her green eyes narrowed behind her glasses.
Steven (off-screen): “Hey, Peri! You in there?”
Peridot groans, pulling the cigarette from her mouth. Peridot: “Yeah, genius, where else would I be? I live here. Don’t just stand there—what’s up?”
Steven steps inside, smiling sheepishly. Behind him is a tall, punk-looking girl with blue hair, tattoos crawling down her arms, and a denim jacket covered in band patches.
Steven: “This is Lapis! She, uh… kinda needs a place to stay for a while.”
Peridot blinks. Looks Lapis up and down. Then back at Steven. Peridot: “You’re joking. She looks like she’d steal my damn tools in her sleep.”
Lapis (dryly): “Only if they’re worth something.”
Steven gasps and quickly covers his ears as Peridot mutters something under her breath that’s definitely not family-friendly.
Peridot (gritting her teeth): “Fine. She can stay. But she keeps her stuff on her side. Touch my projects, and I swear—”
Lapis (cutting in): “Yeah, yeah, I’ll stay out of your junkyard, Sparky.”
Peridot smirks, crossing her arms. Peridot: “...It’s organized chaos, thank you very much.”
Steven beams, clearly thrilled they haven’t killed each other yet. Steven: “Great! I’ll, uh… leave you two to get settled!”
He backs out quickly, leaving Peridot and Lapis standing in the hum of machines and awkward silence.
