The first time he had shown genuine concern towards anyone in the gang (Composed of Johnny Cade, Ponyboy , Sodapop, and Darry Curtis, Steve Randle and Two-Bit Mathews) was when the Curtis parents died. That was the first and probably last time he had seen Darry cry, although he had locked himself in his room, Pony was trying to he strong- but could barely get out of bed in the morning of the funeral. And Sodapop?

Soda was always the crybaby of the family, he would get upset and might start tearing up if you talked to him as if you were mad. That day he had cried so much, during the burial he wasn’t even there from how much it would take for him to not fall to the ground. The gang had been standing near the brothers, closing in on them as if trying to protect them from the rest of the world. When Dallas saw that Sodapop was crying by his side, he had reached out and placed a comforting hand on his back- it was a small action but a big improvement for Dally “I am too tough and badass to care about anyone” Winston.
