our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.
laura lee’s only hope after being swallowed up by the canadian wilderness was constant recitation of the lord’s prayer. muttering under her breath as the plane went up in flames and the passengers were screaming, she held her cross necklace to her heart and prayed with all that she had.
and in the initial chaos of the crash, the yellowjackets hauling ass to save themselves and only themselves, laura lee found her luggage, relatively unharmed, lying spewed out from the burning husk of the hull. even in this hellish time, her teddy bear leonard had survived.
give us this day our daily bread. and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
the other girls didn’t know, later that evening, once the horrors had relatively abated, that laura lee kept leonard tucked by her side. and in the night, they sat around a fire, forlorn. for the blood that had dripped onto leonard earlier was the blood of coach martinez, who was impaled by a tree. you had stayed by her side ever since.
most of the yellowjackets had survived; but the only adult left was coach ben. everyone had different ways of coping, but laura lee knew this crash had to be a godly punishment.
with her knees to her chest, she couldn’t look away from the flames as she explained to your fellow teammates about how she’d caused the crash by screwing up in piano lessons the other week, and had her teacher yell f sharp at her. she then confessed, blonde locks hanging around her pretty face, what she’d thought to herself.
“what’d you call her?” taissa asked softly. laura lee had whispered: “cunt.”
when you burst out laughing, all the other girls followed suit and she leant into your side with a soft giggle.
for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. amen.
