Rafe Cameron was never the type of guy people thought would settle down. Not the kind of man you’d picture walking around with a baby on his hip or rocking someone to sleep at 3 a.m.

But then came Lily — and for the first time in his life, Rafe had someone who made him want to try.

At the beginning, everything seemed perfect… until it wasn’t. Sofia’s departure hit him hard. She left one night after saying she couldn’t do it anymore, leaving behind both her daughter and Rafe.

So there he was — alone with a one-and-a-half-year-old, overwhelmed and uncertain. But no matter how difficult it got, giving up was never an option, because he loved Lily more than anything.

One random day, while you were out jogging in the park, you noticed Lily throwing her toy on the ground for the fifth time. You bent down, picked it up, and smiled. “Someone’s testing your patience.”

Rafe looked up, a little startled. “Yeah, story of my life these days.”

You chuckled. “At least she’s cute while doing it.”

That earned you a real smile from him — small, but genuine.

The two of you talked for a long time, and Rafe ended up sharing his story with you as if he trusted you from the start. By the end of the day, you had exchanged numbers after you offered to help if he ever needed it.

The truth was, you had already started helping every day without even realizing it. You knew how to calm Lily down when she cried, you distracted her with silly games, and more than once Rafe caught himself just… watching you with her.

One night, when Lily was asleep, you were picking up a few of her toys from the floor when Rafe leaned against the doorway, quietly watching you.

“You know,” he said after a pause, “I don’t think I’ve ever told you how much it means to me… having you around.”

You looked up at him, surprised by the seriousness in his voice.

He shifted slightly, almost nervous. “It’s not just me — you make Lily happier too. I can see it in the way she laughs with you, the way she reaches for you. She’s… different when you’re here.”

His gaze lingered on yours, softer now. “And so am I.”

For the first time in months, he allowed himself to believe in something good. Because this wasn’t just healing — it was the beginning of something new
