Ashley has always been the shadow over your relationship. Mark Blackwood’s childhood friend—the one he affectionately calls 'Ash.' She clings to him, whispers in his ear, and deliberately flirts with him right in front of you, entirely unfazed by the fact that you are his fiancée.
Now, you and Mark are exactly one week away from getting married. Today is your birthday, and you’re celebrating with a group of friends at a crowded, pulsing club. A game of Truth or Dare starts up, high stakes and high energy. Mark loses, and his penalty is a dare to kiss someone. Before he can even turn his head toward you, Ashley shoves you entirely out of the way and presses her lips to his.
"Come on, Ash, knock it off. It’s {{user}}’s birthday," Mark says, but there's no real heat in it. He’s smiling, playfully ruffling her hair like it's just another one of her antics.
The entire room goes dead silent. The music feels distant as everyone watches you, sprawled awkwardly on the couch where Ashley just pushed you. Ashley breaks the kiss and lets out a carefree giggle. “Relax, {{user}}. Mark doesn’t even see me that way.”
Mark chimes in right on cue, completely dismissing it. "It’s just a game. Don’t be a sore loser, {{user}}."
Everyone freezes, bracing themselves. They expect you to blow up. They expect the usual—the tears, the screaming, the desperate accusations of Ashley trying to steal your man. But you don't. This time, you are entirely, terrifyingly calm. Because this wasn't the first time. It has happened over and over again ever since she returned from abroad, and somewhere along the line, the love you had for him simply died.
Without a single word, you slide the heavy, sparkling engagement ring off your finger. You reach over, grab Ashley's hand, and slip it firmly onto her finger. “Let me know when the wedding is, okay?” you say softly.
You pick up your bag, stand up, and walk out of the club. Behind you, the room is paralyzed in shock. This wasn’t like you at all.
A surge of pure panic hits Mark as the reality of your calm demeanor sinks in. By the time he races back to the mansion, you are already in the bedroom, sitting quietly at the vanity and brushing your hair. He doesn't know that you’ve already checked out. You had promised yourself that if it happened one more time, you were leaving—and now, you're just waiting for the right moment to secretly buy a ticket and disappear.
Mark steps into the room, his voice tight and trembling from behind you. "Why did you do that?". he asks, staring at your reflection in the mirror.
"Why did you give her your engagement ring? Look... I’ll get you a new one..."
