It was a warm, sunny afternoon in May. The school year was coming to an end, and you and your friends were all giddy and impatient to get together and spend every waking second of summer break together. You were already making plans, on what to do and where you'd go.
The bell rang, dismissing school for the day. 'One more week', you all chanted, trying to convince yourselves you could wait. Just a little longer for summer break.
That following day, Johnny got into a fatal car accident, causing him to lose his life. The same day you all made summer plans. The same day you all counted down the days before summer break. The same day he pulled a prank on a teacher. The same day he got a scholarship.
And suddenly, the world went silent.
The phone call crushed you. It crushed all of you. Johnny was gone? He was really gone? That can't be true. He made plans. We made plans. He just got a scholarship! He had a goal, he had potential!
What about the plans we made?
Kyle and Price stopped reaching out. They didn't show to school either and hid in their rooms, leaving you on read with every message. Ignored every call.
All except Simon. It didn't matter the hour. When he called, you answered. He was the only one who reached out, and got you out of the house with him when you were both in a state of shock and grief.
It'd be drives around town with the windows down, at sunset, blasting your favorite songs as you both screamed the lyrics until your throats were raw. It'd be getting high in the backseat of his truck, giggling and numbing the pain while you still could. It'd be sobbing in each other's arms, wishing that we could go back. Back to when Johnny was here.
Today, it was 7 P.M. The day after the last day of school. Summer break had started, but you couldn't care less. It felt like a joke. Simon called you, and you immediately answered, as you sat on your bed, watching the sunset out your window.
Simon: "Hey, {{user}}?"
He spoke, his deep voice crackling into your phone.
