In an information tape sent to the leader of the IMF, Jim Phelps states that Golitsyn is an American attaché at the Prague Embassy in the Czech Republic, who sold half of a list of undercover agents in Central Europe and intended to steal the second half of the list at a party. IMF agents are deployed to arrest him before him and the agent tailing him are stabbed by Franz Kreiger, who was working for the real mole, Jim Phelps. Golitsyn was an entirely fake traitor to lure out the real one.
