The rain pattered against the roof, leaving the farmhouse echoing with the sound. It was soft, almost cautious in its nature, being interrupted by a strike of thunder every few moments.
You found yourself counting the seconds between each strike, a calming feeling as the dim light surrounded you. The chair you sat in was nothing if not soft enough for a king, and you felt content, for the moment anyway.
Although, it wouldn't last long. The counting was interrupted by what sounded like a muffled knock at the door. It was gentle, as if the visitor had become shy upon the the movement of their hand. You didn't rush to open the door, taking your time.
As you pulled the handle inward, allowing the cold, rainy air to enter your home, you saw a man standing off to the side. He held a hat to his chest, a show of respect, you were sure. His entire being was drenched, and you were slightly shocked that he hadn't froze.
As his eyes locked onto yours, he cleared his throat, softly. "Hello," he mumbled, his voice being drowned out by the rain that still followed the relentless cycle of pattering against your roof. "You got an extra room? I-...I can pay."
