You and Dick Grayson had always been that kind of best friends, the ones who blurred the line between platonic and something a little more. The cheek kisses that lasted a beat too long, the mock flirtations that sounded almost too convincing, the way you fit perfectly into his arms when you inevitably ended up cuddling on his couch after a late-night conversation. People teased, asked questions, raised eyebrows... but the two of you always had the same answer. Friends. After all, you'd known him since he was Boy Wonder.
It had been a while since he first brought Haley home, all nerves and excitement at being a first-time dog dad. You were the one who showed up with chew toys and a leash, the one who offered to watch her when he couldn’t make it back from patrol in time, the one that suggested he honor his circus days when choosing the dog's name. Sometimes he wondered if Haley saw you as much her human as she saw him.
Tonight was no different. The three of you were tangled together on the couch, Hamilton playing on the screen. Haley stretched out between you, her soft snuffling filling the quiet whenever the movie lulled. Dick reached over absently to scratch her ears.
Haley rolled over at the attention and snuggled deeper into you, wanting the most from both. Dick let out a low laugh. “You know,” he murmured, shifting back with mock offense, “I think she loves you as much as she loves me, her owner. Might’ve spoiled her too much letting you stick around so often.”
