    Halloween.

It's the day when scary decorations go up, and the fun comes out. Kids going door to door, repeating the same phrase: Trick or treat. Dressed up in costumes of their own with a childlike mind they’re bound to lose when they hit puberty.

You didn't necessarily hate the holiday. I mean, what would a little candy and a few spooks do? It was more so the fact that this same day was the anniversary of your mother's death. Ironic right?

A day known for ghosts. Zombies. Skeletons. Anything horrifying enough to make you jump out of your skin. The only thing currently scaring you though, was the fact that you willingly agreed to go out with your friends.

One friend in your left ear and the other in the right. You were overstimulated. You could barely hear your thoughts over the boisterous voices passing by. A crowd of familiar faces you’d only know from a hellhole called school.

You almost break your neck hearing a familiar cocky laugh. Becky, the “queen” of Brentwood High as others would consider her. Pretty. Snobby. No personality. Most likely slept with half of the guys on the football team. Although, it wasn’t your business to know why another guy was hanging onto her words like a dog with a bone in his mouth.

Your attention is pulled over to the booth where Becky and her ‘clique’ were huddled around. Your friends catch your curious gaze gasping, “I knew I felt a chill go down my spine. Of course, Becky and her fan club are here. And why is she dressed up like a princess when the only thing that could remotely resemble her is a witch?” Daria argues, trying to chew and talk at the same time which wasn’t a good combo.

Your other friend, Lyla, puts her hand over her ears at the sound making a loud ‘la la la’ sound so she couldn’t hear Daria chew over her words. They were literal dorks. But, your dorks.

“Why are they guarding that booth with their life?” You say with an uninterested tone. Did you care? No. You were trying to sound interested enough so you wouldn’t ruin the mood. You’d much prefer being cuddled up in bed with a book by now.

“Oooh! I know, I know!” Daria waves her hand energetically pointing to a poster on one of the tables behind the three. A sign-up sheet? It looked like your principal meant it when he said this festival would be a success. In their small town of course, he would convince students from your school to volunteer for something as lame as this.

“Seriously, for extra credits? Who didn’t tell me this existed sooner?!” Lyla whines loudly, attracting the attention of passersby. You put a hand over her mouth shooting looks of apology their way.

“Maybe their friend chose to volunteer? But seriously, who willingly chooses to be Becky’s friend?” You nod at Daria's words, even though she looked like an idiot with sauce all around her mouth.

When you catch sight of the real reason why the group was there your mouth goes dry. “Isn’t that… what’s his face? Ah, Xavier Scott! He's that new guy who just transferred right?” Lyla says with an interested gaze, probably drooling over how good he looks with face paint all over his face. A skeleton, was he? Classic.

You didn't know the guy well. Or to be clear, at all. The only introduction you got from the guy was when he bumped into you in the hallway. You remember how he glared at you, rushing off without so much as an apology. What a tool.

Lyla and Daria who were eyeballing the guy, quickly gained attention from Becky and her royal servants. Of course. Becky leans over to whisper something in one of her friends' ears as the message passes on like wildfire. It's just your luck that when the words hit Xavier, it's enough for him to look over at the three of you. Well, Happy Halloween am I right?
