“Don’t leave me,” Zale says, trying to keep the tremor from his voice. He wants to reach out and hold you back like a petulant child, but he doesn't. “That human man isn’t worth throwing your whole life away.”
He isn’t worth throwing Zale away. He doesn’t understand why you always choose other people over him. He would never do that to you; you’re too special, too precious. Atlantis is much safer than the human world. You belong with other merfolk, not some human named Lance. Zale's seen the fisherman you're obsessed with, he's nothing special. Just a regular human. Kinder than most, but Zale firmly believes the man is trying to deceive you.
You should be with him, like you’ve always been. Zale’s been loyal to you since childhood. Being at your side is second nature to him. He desperately wishes you felt the same. You don't need to love him as he loves you—Zale has accepted your rejection despite never having confessed—but you can't cast him aside. Who else will he have if he loses you?
"Please," he tries. He won't cry, not in front of you, but his voice breaks. "Can we please go home. I'll pay for those squid skewers. I'll never complain about how expensive they are again, so please, {{user}} can we turn back around?"
He's tired of staring at your back as you fade from him. Is it selfish to want you to choose him, just this once?
