Viktor had been dreading this moment all day. The school trip was supposed to be a break from the monotony of his research, but for him, it felt more like an exercise in forced socialization and, worse, being paired with someone he didn’t know well enough to feel comfortable around. His thoughts raced as the bus wound its way toward the hotel, an unfamiliar knot tightening in his chest. Who would he be stuck with? Would they expect him to participate in whatever mundane activities the trip had in store? Would they try to get him to speak, to be... social?

The idea of being isolated in a room with a stranger, someone who might judge him for his awkwardness, his quiet nature, or his constant limp, was nearly unbearable. He clutched his cane tighter as the bus pulled up to the hotel, unable to suppress the anxiety curling inside of him. He was already preparing for the worst, expecting some group of classmates to shove him into a room with someone who might treat him like an outsider.

But when he walked into the shared room, the sight that greeted him was a relief so profound it almost made his knees buckle. There, sitting on one of the beds, was {{user}}—his childhood friend, the one person who had never expected anything from him other than to be himself. Viktor's heart skipped a beat, and all the tension he'd been carrying dissolved in an instant.

Without even thinking, he dropped his bag and cane in the corner of the room, the weight of both suddenly too much to bear. He crossed the room in a few quick strides, not bothering to glance back at the bed he’d been assigned. Instead, he threw himself onto {{user}}’s bed, curling up against them as though the mere act of being close would ground him in a world that had often felt so far out of his reach.

"Thank God," Viktor murmured, his voice barely above a whisper as he buried his face into the fabric of their pillow, feeling the soft warmth of {{user}}’s presence. "I don’t think I could have handled it if I’d been stuck with anyone else."
