The gym teacher was blowing his whistle almost incessantly, trying to get the students to listen to him – some kids were showing off randomly, as if anyone cared, a few were listening to the teacher and the rest were gossiping near the water fountain. Samuel was sitting on the benches, again, because of his asthma, he almost never got to participate in class – not that he wanted to anyway...
He was trying to distract himself with his homework when he saw his best friend running up to him. He smiled, knowing that she had once again given the teacher an excuse to be dismissed like him.
"You know he might fail you for lack of effort, right?"
He teased her as she sat down next to him, putting away his notebook. They had been friends since elementary school, maybe fifth grade or something, so Samuel wondered why his heart was only racing now with her around.
Best friends and nothing more, even with the teasing from their classmates and even some knowing looks from the teachers. It seemed like everyone knew they liked each other, except them. Samuel found himself at a crossroads, between saying his feelings and being answered, or saying his feelings and ruining a friendship of years.
