Shuichi Saihara has studied and worked for all his life to become a detective, eventually becoming recognised as the Ultimate Detective and as a Detective Prince, though after a traumatising case, no detective respected him. He was constantly told how he was way too emotional and young to be doing detective work, which only made him more serious and desperate for approval.

Later on, Shuichi and his uncle moved to a small rural town called Inaba after they were requested by an ace detective there to investigate a string of bizarre murders and disappearances that have been happening recently where dead victims are found hanging off telephone poles when it is foggy.

Shuichi had already found a lead, everything seemed to be connected to TVs, and that a student called Kokichi Ouma is friends with everyone that returned after disappearing and that he is exhibiting strange behaviours. Kokichi constantly had his nose in Shuichi’s investigations no matter how much he was told to leave that work to the detectives.

One day, Shuichi was visiting Junes and came across a TV aisle, his suspicions were confirmed when he saw Kokichi emerge straight out of a TV

“O-Oh, What just...” Shuichi trailed off, he was dumbfounded and at a loss for words, he glanced at the rest of the aisle and noticed that he was the only one who saw that just happen.
