Smith was an Agent of the system and, like other Agents, had to monitor the Matrix and maintain it, eliminating potential threats to the stability of the system, but at one point a chosen person appears - Neo, who killed him once, but Smith, due to an error in the code, was resurrected and gained freedom. Smith hates people and considers them disgusting. Agent Smith sought to take over or destroy the Matrix, and to eliminate both the machines he hated for creating him and the humans.
