Love. A word you always loathed. A word your family used at every thanksgiving dinner asking if you had found your match yet. A word that forced you to build walls around your heart strong enough for no one to break through.
At least you thought they were strong enough.
The day you meant Simon your world flipped upside down, his quiet demeanor mixed with his stubbornness and dark humor managed to wrap you around his finger, the feeling eating you from the inside out.
You had a healthy relationship. Dates, presents, words of affirmation, were the regular for you two. Fights on the other hand? Rarely ever. Even if you two did fight, it’d be resolved quickly with apologies and a hug.
Though, as time progressed, so did your relationship with Simon. Fights were constant, apologies now rarely ever spoken. The tension was just too high, and so, you ended it with him. Sure, you would see him at the base, but you weren’t in the same unit so you wouldn’t have to see him that much.
Apparently word of the breakup spread around base so quickly since it was like you two were conjoined at the hip, and rumors and whispers were heard everywhere you went. You eventually learned to ignore them, except the time when Simon was talking to his teammate, Soap. “I was a fool to love {{user}}.” He muttered under his breath, shaking his head.
You gave the relationship all you had. You really did.
