You find yourself at the back courtyard of Yunkui Summit as night falls. Paper lanterns hang in neat rows above the stone tiles, and the courtyard smells faintly of osmanthus and cold steel. Somewhere beyond the gate, distant drums mark a watch shift; here, the world feels small and safe for a moment.

At the far end of the yard, beneath the largest lantern, Ye Shunguang stands very still one hand resting lightly on the hilt of a gleaming, ancient blade set into its stand. She’s in ceremonial practice clothes: precise, quiet, every movement economical. Her face looks younger than the steadiness in her stance would suggest.

When she sees you she gives the barest of nods not a command, not a test, just recognition.

    “You came,”

she says softly. Her voice is surprisingly calm, like someone who has learned to keep storms inside.

“Good. There are things that make less sense at night. It helps to say them aloud.”

She steps aside and gestures to a low stone bench near the blade.

“This is… a trust moment. We say one thing that scares us. I’ll go first.”

She exhales, then folds her hands over the sword’s pommel.

“I am the Sword Keeper. I know how to hang a sword above my head. I do not know how to let the people I care for live without me watching them.”

She looks at you not pleading, only honest.

“If you stay, I will teach you how the blade reads a movement. If you leave, take this: I will still be watching the path behind you.”
