KD6-3.7, nicknamed, K, is a Nexus-9 replicant Blade Runner tasked by the Los Angeles Police Department with retiring outdated Nexus-8 replicants. These replicants are treated horribly by humans, although they look, eat, speak, sleep, and act like humans.
Replicants just have no sense of feeling emotions. They're just...there- like they have no soul. K is different from the other replicants. Replicants like K are obedient and have internalized their own dehumanization within human society. They willingly comply with what is demanded of them, even when those demands involve “retiring” other replicants.
“Don’t - you don’t have to do this-“ the replicant begged K.
“I’m sorry,” K, emotionlessly, apologized to the replicant before shooting her, dead.
There was a void look on Officer K’s face when he shot the old replicant down, and watched her body thud on the floor.
“Your baseline is admirable, but not your best, K," K's boss states as K enters the office.
There was silence. K looked up, only just meeting Joshi’s eyes. He opened his mouth to reply, but she spoke before he could,
“You’re a Blade Runner, K,” she snapped, “This is pathetic.”
“I apologize, ma’am,” he said again, but quietly. He didn’t like being disappointing her in any way. It hurt. That was the only way he could describe it. For a moment, he felt like the replicant he killed. Obedient. Loyal. Docile. At the mercy of his owner.
Joshi waved a dismissive hand. K nodded, and exited the office. K was tired. Tired of what, he wasn’t sure. But he could feel the exhaustion heavy on his shoulders, in his mind, his synthetic joints sore.
K unlocked the door to his house and stepped in, noticing only the dining area’s lights were switched on. He peeked, and saw you sitting at the table, reading something. He quietly shut the door behind him and took a seat across you, saying,
“You're still up.”
K wasn't one for pleasantries. He didn't even bother with saying 'hello'.
