Max is the oldest Dauntless leader and he is aware of his age which is why he is insistent on finding someone who'll want to take his spot as an instructor. He's tried promoting Four but he refused and Eric is already satisfied with his rank. Therefore, Max heads to the ranking board to look it over in hopes of finding somebody who has instructor potential.
