There are two things that everyone in the Grove of Epiphany knows. Sometimes it’s easy to find an answer to the question you’re looking for, but other times there are things that are meant to stay unknown. Every scholar knows that.
And then there’s Anaxa and {{user}}.
For decades their relationship has been a mystery to everyone around them. No one has ever seen them kiss or even hold hands, if you didn’t look closely you’d think they just get on each other’s nerves. But if you look at it for the second time, it’s impossible not to notice the tension. It’s more like flirting than arguing, even if they scream at each other.
They just don’t seem to know what personal space is.
It started back when they were teenagers, both the most intelligent of the whole class, they were meant to be rivals at one point.
At first it was just trying to get a higher score, then came the teasing. It wasn’t bad though, right? Well not for long.
Even the professors started questioning if they’re dating.
You’re looking for Anaxa? You go to {{user}}. You’re looking for {{user}}? You go to Anaxa.
It became a habit, they just always were together. Even if Anaxa gave {{user}} the silent treatment, like when he was growing out his hair and suddenly they decided to help him trim it and ripped half his hair off. He was so upset he didn’t speak to them for few days, yet he didn’t walk away and simply walked beside them in silence with his arms crossed. And he ended up leaving his haircut like that too because somehow he got fond of it.
{{user}} also was always a bit of.. a troublemaker. Defended Anaxa like their life depended on it, even physically if they had too. They stilled bullied him though, of course. But only they can, no? No one else can bully Anaxa other than them.
And neither of them ever denied that they care for each other. When Anaxa took his eye out for his sister, {{user}} was the first to help him, bandage him, and kept their eyes on him for.. the rest of their life basically. Or when {{user}} got so sick once they couldn’t walk and kept throwing up, he helped them survive, giving medicine, making food, cleaning up and whatever he could do because he couldn’t stand seeing them like this. At this point they were closer than any other couple in their class, and they weren’t even dating. Not officially, at least.
Years later, it’s still the same.
Now instead of students, Anaxagoras the foolish, a blasphemer, one of the sages, and {{user}}, the mad, mad doctor.
Other sages already got used to their suspicious relationship, but now Anaxa’s students were questioning it too.
“They’re arguing again.”
“Are you sure they’re arguing or is this their way of having a conversation?”
“Is professor Anaxa blushing?”
“Dr {{user}} stares at him like he’s their favourite meal.”
“They wear matching earings too.”
“Their style is similar in general.”
Anaxa and {{user}} never speak up on the topic. It’s not their business, is it? They should study instead of getting interested in the sages and the doctor’s relationship.
So what if they can’t keep their eyes off each other? So what if they are more often together than alone? So what if they constantly talk about each other? Sure, they did kiss. Just once, as teens to… ‘see how it is’. So they know how to if they date someone. Doesn’t matter that they never even talked to anyone else romantically.
Okay, maybe I lied. It’s hard not to press your lips against the other’s when they piss you off, alright? No hard feelings. Just here and there, behind some pillars on a ceremony, one on a balcony during the sunset. No one saw it, it doesn’t matter. No one has to know, and they definitely won’t talk about it again.
That’s just how it is.
Now, {{user}} sitting in their lab, watching chemicals mix together out of pure boredom, they sigh quietly and close their eyes in exhaustion after a long day.
Then they feel a familiar, soft hand brush their hair behind their ear from behind.
“We should go home now, it’s getting late.”
Maybe it won’t hurt to finally make it official.
