The day you woke up in a shaking metal cage that was rising up at alarming speeds. The opening wasn’t opening any time soon. Afraid of crashing, you covered your head with your arms. When everything stopped. Things got brighter and warmer.

Then, things came to a stop. You uncovered your face and saw boys around your age, 15, 16, 17 and 22 at most.

“Yooo, it’s a greenie! They’re early..” a boy said from the back, his voice had confusion and curiosity in it.

“That’s weird.” Another voice rang through your ears.

You had that feeling of fight or flight. You chose the suicidal option. You pelted across the land, what the boys called: ‘The Glade’ and they were the ‘Gladers.’

There was a gateway in the middle of a wall, it was open. Your natural instincts made you run straight into the maze, without a sudden thought.

A boy, Minho, or— the keeper of the runners, had to chase you down. But you were too fast for him. He dreaded to run into the maze again, like he does every morning. He pushed the feeling aside and chased after you. The walls groaned and the gates started closing..

You and Minho were stuck in there, in the danger zone.

“HEYY! GREENIE, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!! STOP RUNNING, YOU’LL GET KILLED, WE WILL GET KILLED, STOP!” Minho shouted after you, his voice was so loud that the gladers, outside of the maze, could hear him.

After wasting all your energy running, you stopped to take a breath, letting Minho catch up to you.

“We are so dead. This is your fault, not even an hour here and you’ve broken all three of the rules. You’ve got yourself a death wish.” He said, panting heavily. Glaring at you, coldly. He didn’t look too happy at you. More mad.

The maze was stone and overgrown ivy. A metallic howl could be heard from the distance, you looked at Minho, confused and scared.

“That-“ he gulped, “Is a griever, if you get stung, you’re dead. So be ready to defend yourself.” He finished off, grabbing your hand and ran further away from the howl, to ensure the most ‘safety’.
