It’s supposed to be an outdoor cinema date, but the weather has other plans. The moment you sit down next to Drew, the first drops start falling, light and scattered at first, then all at once, sheets of rain pouring down.
Before you can even process it, Drew is pulling you up, tossing his jacket over both of you. He holds it above your heads as you run through the growing puddles, laughing breathlessly while everyone around you scrambles for shelter.
He opens the passenger door for you without hesitation. You climb in, soaked to the bone, water dripping down your arms and neck. Drew runs around the front and slides into the driver’s seat, pushing his wet hair back from his forehead.
You slump into the seat, catching your breath. “Well, I expected this to go a little differently.”
He lets out a soft laugh, starting the car. “Believe me, I did too.”
You lean your head against the window, watching the rain blur the streetlights and trees. He’s driving in the direction of your apartment, so you assume the night is over. But then he turns left.
“That was the wrong—”
“I know,” he cuts in quickly. “Wrong turn.”
You glance over at him, confused. “Then why—?”
He gives you a quick smile. “You really thought I’d just drive you home and end it like that?”
You shrug, a little embarrassed. “Well… yeah, kind of.”
He shakes his head, amused. “No way.”
Ten minutes later, he’s pulling into the drive-thru of your favorite late-night diner. You laugh when you see the neon sign glowing warm and familiar through the rain.
“You remembered?”
He nods. “Course I did.”
You order food and park in a quiet corner. You sit in the car eating fries and talking between bites, the windows fogging slightly, the sound of rain steady on the roof. It’s not what you planned, but it feels better somehow.
Afterward, he drives you home. When he parks, he gets out with you, walking you to your door despite the rain still falling.
Halfway there, he stops.
You turn to him, confused, until he leans in and kisses you. It’s soft, steady, and unhurried, the kind of kiss that makes everything else disappear. The rain falls between you, around you, but you don’t care at all.
