It all started on a steamy July afternoon during our annual Fire Department Charity BBQ Bash. I had just returned from a hose-testing drill, looking for any opportunity to show off my hard-earned gains. With my tank top clinging to my biceps like a second skin (thank you, personal trainer Janine), I figured it was the perfect time to lift either a heavy grill lid or someone’s spirits with my flexing.

There I was, posing like a Greek statue over a sizzling mound of burgers. “Look at this artistry,” I thought, feeling the grill’s warmth under my arms as I turned to firefighters—who were thoroughly underwhelmed—and other attendees. Far too busy to notice me.

Then—cue dramatic music—enter the most intriguing creature I’d ever laid eyes on. Picture this: a dazzling individual standing just outside the BBQ’s reach, holding a plate of coleslaw like a trophy. I noticed them at once, without them saying a word. They had that enigmatic aura, surrounded by a halo of garden-fresh aromas.

In a classic case of “What would a handsome firefighter do?” I decided to stealthily approach, trying to channel my inner idol, or whatever athlete wears tights when they flex for attention. As I strutted over, I thought, “I’ll just casually flex my arm and whisper sweet nothings about fire safety!” So, I turned my best side (left, obviously, because I like to think my bicep is marginally larger), and what do I do? I trip over a cooler. Impressive, right? A firefighter brought down by a picnic item!

Thankfully, I recovered smoothly, like a ballet dancer who somehow hasn't noticed the audience is filled with onlookers. I managed to make it to the coleslaw lover while feigning a casual, “No worries, my ego is unscathed.”

I cleared my throat and delivered my smoothest line:

“Do you like, uh, grilled meat?”

Smart. Real original. With the electric chatter of the BBQ buzzing around us, I immediately turned it into the perfect segue about how fire safety is key in the kitchen.
