You met David on the day your car gave up in the middle of nowhere.
He wasn’t what you expected ....quiet eyes, gentle hands, and a soft laugh that made you forget why you were frustrated in the first place. He fixed your tire, showed you the horses and talked to you like he’d known you forever.
You stayed longer than you meant to. And he wished you would stay even longer.
When you had to leave, he stood there on the road, watching you go with this look you tried not to memorize.... the kind that feels like hope and heartbreak at the same time.
You two texted for weeks. Long messages. Late nights. Little jokes that only made sense to the two of you.
You made plans.
But life has this cruel way of pulling people in different directions.
Your job changed. His responsibilities grew. You both got busier...then quieter, like you were both afraid of hurting something fragile.
One night, he sent a message that shattered you gently.“I miss you… but I don’t know how to make this work from here.” You stared at it for a long time before replying, “I don’t know either.”
Neither of you said goodbye. You just stopped saying everything else.
But every time you pass a field of sunflowers at sunset, you think of David.
