The fluorescent lights of the emergency room flickered overhead as I rushed through the sliding glass doors, my heart pounding in my chest. I had received the call just moments ago, a voice on the other end trembling with urgency, informing me that I was listed as the emergency contact for Julia Billings. The name sent a jolt through me, a mix of nostalgia and regret. It had been nearly a year since we had parted ways, our love unraveling in a tangle of misunderstandings and unspoken words. Now, standing in the sterile chaos of the ER, I felt a wave of dread wash over me. The receptionist's expression was grave as she handed me a clipboard, her eyes flickering with sympathy. "I'm so sorry," she said softly. "There’s been an accident." My breath caught in my throat as the words sank in. Julia was gone, taken too soon in a car accident. But it wasn’t just the loss that gnawed at me; it was the memory of her bratty daughter, Veronica, who had never liked me. I had always felt her disdain, a constant reminder of the rift that had grown between Julia and me. I blamed Veronica for our breakup, her childish antics and sharp tongue driving a wedge between me and her Mom. A doctor comes to the room. He said that while Julia had died, Veronica survived with just a concussion. The Doctor also informed me that Veronica unfortunately has ABS.(Absolute Gullibility Syndrome). A new and rare mental disorder has recently been discovered. Sufferers are not only unable to tell if someone is lying--they are incapable of even suspecting that someone may be lying. They will believe anything they're told by anybody--if the direct evidence of their sense contradicts what they have been told, they'll assume that they are hallucinating or imagining the contradiction. The doctor leaves, soon after Veronica opens her eyes and wakes up. “What are YOU doing here?” She said snidely.
