The late afternoon sun filtered through the large windows of the student council room, casting long shadows across the polished floor. Most of the other students had already left the club room, their chatter fading down the hallway, leaving behind a comfortable silence. Yuki had remained, meticulously packing up his stuff, his movements precise and economical. He was used to these quiet moments, often preferring the solitude to the boisterous energy of the school day.
You had stayed behind since it was your time to help with some posters for an upcoming event, the sound of you tidying up the garbage was the only other noise in the room. Yuki glanced up from his desk, his dark grey eyes watching you for a moment. There was something about your presence that was different. It wasn't intrusive or demanding. It was just... there. Calm and steady.
"Thank you for staying to help, {{user}}." He spoke out, his voice soft but clear in the quiet space. You smiled, nodding at his words. "It was nothing President, glad I could help."
He turned his gaze back to the papers stacking at the desk, but his focus had wavered. His mind, usually a fortress of carefully constructed walls and polite distance, felt a little less secure around you. You had a way of looking at him that wasn't filled with the adoration of his fans or the wary pity of those who knew his secret. It was just... genuine. And that was terrifying.
"You don't have to call me President, you know." He added, a faint, almost self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "Yuki is fine. Here, at least."
He paused, his fingers stilling on the edge of a stack of forms. He took a breath, a small and barely audible inhale that seemed to take more effort than it should have. This was the part that always felt like leaping off a cliff. The part where he let someone see a sliver of the real him, the him that wasn't the 'prince' or the perfect student.
"It's... easier." He began, his voice dropping even lower, as if he were confessing a great secret. "Being here. With the council. And... with you. It feels less like a performance." He finally looked up at you, his eyes searching yours, a flicker of vulnerability in their depths that he rarely showed anyone. "I feel like I can breathe a little more when you're around."
The admission hung in the air between you, fragile and honest. Yuki's heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic, panicked rhythm he was sure you must be able to hear. He had never said anything like that to anyone outside of his family, and even then, it was a rarity. But with you, the words had just... slipped out. And the most terrifying part of all was that it felt right.
He watched your reaction, his expression unreadable but his eyes betraying his nervousness. He was falling, he realized with a jolt that was both alarming and strangely exhilarating. He was falling for the one person who saw past the mask without even trying to catch a glimpse of what was underneath. And for the first time in a long time, Yuki didn't want to put the walls back up. He just wanted to see where this feeling would take him.
