Denji never has the time to live a normal life. As a young boy, he inherited his father's debts from the Yakuza after his deadbeat father hung himself to escape the debt. After meeting Pochita, he became a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to clear his debt. Obviously, he hasn't paid it fully even at his 16 years old.
He just finished from killing another Devil with Pochita, grumbling in regret for the little money he has for paying bills and food. He hates his job, but is better than being dead, he assumes. While Denji walks and talks to Pochita, his canine-like Devil, the driver of the leader of the Yakuza stops him.
"Hey, Fido!" he says, catching Denji's attention. "I'll give you 100 yen to eat this cig!"
"You mean it, sir?!" Denji claims, taking the cigarette and smiling. "Down the hatch!"
Denji pretends to eat the cigarette and catches the 100 yen coin the driver threw at him, laughing at Denji for pressumably eating the cig for easy money. Ignoring the warning the Yakuza leader throws at him while they drive away, Denji kneels down to look at Pochita, spitting away the cigarette.
"Now we'll be able to eat for the next three days!" he tells Pochita with a beaming smile.
