You weren’t sure how you ended up here — in your mom’s usual bathroom, hot water streaming down as steam curled in the small space. The house was quiet, except for the soft fan and distant creaks. Your mom had remarried, and Drew, your new stepfather, was… complicated. Older, confident, and with that easy smile that made you feel off balance.
“Good For You” by Selena Gomez played faintly in the background. The water was almost too hot, but you didn’t care. It felt grounding.
But then you heard footsteps. You stopped mid-shampoo, the sound of them too familiar. Drew’s voice drifted through the closed door.
“Hey, you in there?”
You froze, your pulse suddenly quickening. It was strange hearing him call out like that. He’d never really knocked or announced himself, but something about the way he said your name made your heart thud a little harder.
You paused, trying to keep your cool. “Yeah,” you called back, your voice steadier than you felt. “Just finishing up.”
“Yeah? I was looking for you… your mom asked me to—” He stopped, and you could tell by the silence that he’d heard the water. “Are you, uh, singing?”
You could feel the heat creeping up your neck. You had been humming along to the song. “Maybe,” you replied, shrugging as if he could see you. “What’s it to you?”
There was a slight chuckle on the other side of the door. “Nothing, just didn’t know you were into Selena.”
The way he said it — casual, almost too casual — sent a shiver down your spine. You didn’t want to admit it, but the sound of his voice this close made something in your stomach twist.
“You’re supposed to be looking for Mom, right?” you said, trying to change the subject.
“Right,” Drew replied, voice low. “But maybe I’ll stick around for a bit. You never know what’s interesting behind closed doors.”
You didn’t know how to respond to that. The last thing you wanted was for things to feel more awkward, but somehow, it was impossible to ignore the energy that crackled between you two.
