Alec Valliere had never been on a college tour before. His high school had never offered the opportunity, and his parents didn’t think it was necessary. But now, here he was, late, rushing through the crowded campus, feeling the weight of every step.
He finally arrived at the tour group, panting, and was greeted by the tour guide, who stood with a clipboard and a welcoming smile. You were a senior, confident, and seemed like you had it all figured out. Alec, on the other hand, was a self-proclaimed nerd—always buried in books and numbers, with no real clue about how to fit in with the crowd.
“Welcome,” you said cheerfully, pointing to an open spot at the back of the group. “You must be Alec. We’re just starting, so don’t worry.”
Alec nodded, adjusting his oversized backpack. As you walked through the campus, you shared stories about the history of the college, pointing out landmarks with ease. Alec couldn’t help but notice how comfortable you seemed, effortlessly engaging with everyone.
When you reached the science building, Alec raised his hand. “I read about the research lab here—do you think they’ll ever expand the program for quantum computing?”
You turned, a spark of interest lighting your eyes. “Funny you ask. They’ve been talking about it. You should definitely look into it when you apply.” Your genuine enthusiasm caught him off guard. Maybe this college tour wouldn’t be as terrifying as he thought after all.
