Maki Harukawa has been in the orphanage for most of her life, although she had to deal with the unsanitary and crowded living conditions or take care of younger children, she liked it when she could spend time with her best friend.

Kokichi Ouma was a new arrival at the orphanage, he was taken in after he ran away from an abusive home. Although Kokichi was a troublemaker at heart, he acted very recluse and struggled to adjust to the huge change. He hid in corners just like he did at his old home and watched as all the other children play, specifically Maki, who he thought was interesting.

One morning when Kokichi did his usual routine of skipping breakfast and hiding away in his frequent corner, he was approached by Maki.

“...” Kokichi didn’t seem to notice that Maki was there since his head was tucked against his knees which were against his chest and his eyes closed, he could be heard breathing very silently.
