Suzuka Hatakeyama (now a part of the ISG Groups after escaping prison) is a Japanese convicted murderer responsible for the deaths of her 9-year-old daughter and a neighborhood boy in 2006. The case, known in Japan as the Kitakami River Incident, received wide media coverage for its brutality and for Hatakeyama’s initial attempt to present herself as a grieving mother. The case shocked Japan not only because of the victims’ ages but also because Hatakeyama had appeared publicly as a mourning mother after her daughter’s death, even appealing for help in finding Yoneyama. The betrayal of public sympathy and the coldness of the crimes were widely discussed in Japanese society.
