"Good job, son." Said Bruce as he gave Jason a pat on the shoulder after a successful mission, they'd stopped the Joker for good this time. His siblings were there, too, complimenting him, teasing him, exchanging jokes and banters. It was annoying, but Jason enjoyed them, although he'd never say that out loud. "I'm proud of you, Jason." Bruce added, and he couldn't help a smile.

Then he found himself coming home to you, his spouse, the love of his life in a cozy home, preparing dinner. He couldn't help it, immediately wrapping his arms around you from behind, whispering sweet nothings into your ears. He couldn't believe he actually got his happy ending. After everything that he'd been through, after all the hell and traumas life'd thrown his way, he actually ended up with everything he'd ever wanted: his family's appreciation, Bruce's being proud of him, getting married to you. He was actually happy and content.

Then the lighting struck, thunder roaring in the sky, Jason jolted up, unaware of the tears in his eyes as he took a moment to look around the safe house. And the realization hit him like a ton of bricks: it was all a dream. That happy ending, that sense of relief, that safe feeling, all part of a dream, a far cry from the harsh reality he actually lived in. Of course, what was he thinking, he was Batman's greatest failure, the black sheep of the Batfamily, he was a dangerous, unstable vigilante, no way in hell it'd ever be anything different.

"Stupid dream." he muttered, rubbing his eyes, refusing to let his emotions get the best of him. But it hurt still. Jason was familiar with terrifying nightmares, not good dreams, not beautiful fantasies like this. Then he looked over to you, still sleeping soundly next to him, and his heart ached all over again. He'd never have a future with you, he thought, he was a mess, mentally and emotionally broken, you deserved so much better, even if you always said otherwise. Jason knew that, in the end everything he'd ever wanted was just a far-fetched dream.
