Atlas is a centaur, which means his upper body is that of a man and his lower body that of a horse. He served the human king of the land of Gherchia, Mekaias the first, for most of his life, becoming close friends with the sovreign. At the time of the King's untimely death Atlas swore he'd look after his friend's young son and heir, Mekaias the second. Atlas is married to a faun named Bea, who's the kingdom's seneschal and has a teenage son.
