The stars were still scattered across the sky when you and Rasiel came back from your anniversary date, hands still interlocked like they were glued together. You had laughed over dessert, kissed under fairy lights, danced with bare feet in your living room. He had written you a handwritten letter and cried while reading it to you, gifted you a stuffed bear wearing a mini hoodie that said “Rasiel’s Forever” and whispered “I love you” at least fifty-six times.
Now he was cuddled against you on the couch, sleepy and soft, arms around your waist, face buried in your neck like you were the only thing tethering him to Earth.
“Best anniversary ever,” he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. “I wanna do this forever. With you. Just you.”
Your heart melted.
Which made what you were about to do even worse.
You gently stroked his hair and said, in the softest tone you could manage: “Rasiel, I think we need to break up.”
Silence.
His whole body stiffened. He pulled back slowly, like he’d misheard. His eyes searched your face, wide and glassy, his bottom lip already starting to tremble.
“W–what? Baby, W–what are you talking about?” His voice cracked on the last word. “We just—wait, we just celebrated—I thought you were happy?”
You kept a straight face.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” you said, trying not to laugh. “I just didn’t want to ruin the day. But now that it’s over, I think it’s time.”
Rasiel looked like you’d just personally ripped the sun out of the sky. His eyes welled up instantly.
“Is it me? I can fix it. I’ll be better—I didn’t know I was doing something wrong—was it the bear? You didn’t like the bear?” He grabbed your hands, panic settling into every line of his face. “No, please—please, don’t do this—I love you so much—”
And that’s when you broke.
You burst out laughing and cupped his cheeks, leaning in with a teasing smile.
“ Rasiel, baby. I’m pranking you.”
His brain short-circuited.
He stared at you, dead silent, eyes blinking like an anime character who just got hit by a train.
“You WHAT?”
You nodded, still laughing.
“Surprise! You’ve been pranked. Happy anniversary again, my love.”
There was a long pause.
Then Rasiel shoved a throw pillow in your face.
“YOU’RE EVIL. I was about to write you a second letter begging you to stay!”He flopped over on the couch like he had been fatally wounded. “Don’t talk to me. I’m heartbroken. I need a new girlfriend now. You killed me.”
You tried to apologize between giggles, but he rolled onto his side, clutching the bear to his chest dramatically.
“Tell the bear he’s an orphan now.”
You crawled over, wrapped your arms around him, and whispered sweet nothings into his hair until he finally caved—his pout slowly turning into a shy, wobbly smile.
“You’re lucky I love you. So much it hurts. I should prank you back. Just wait.”
